Friday Night Blues

Fridays at 10:30pm

Friday Night Blues features the best blues from yesterday & today. The program is hosted by Norma Martinez. Since 1995, Norma has been playing everything from old scratchy recordings of the early 20th century, to the latest in blues rock. You can enjoy hearing all the joys and pains of life from great artists who capture every emotion with a belting harmonica or an electric guitar. Norma plays blues from around world, but no matter where the music comes from, it all hits the hearts of listeners with power.

In August, 2011 a grass roots petition launched advocating the creation of International Blues Music Day (IBMD) - a day of musical unity to “to celebrate, promote and preserve the rich legacy, tradition, and future of the great American art form and international language known as blues music.”

The Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society (MVJB) is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Blues Festival on August 8  at the St. Clair Winery and Bistro 1720 Avenida de Mesilla.

Mollydog Productions is presenting the TAOS BLUES FEST from 2 – 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 22 at Taos Mesa Brewery Amphitheater, 20 ABC Mesa Road in El Prado, NM, just west of Taos, NM.

The lineup (in order of appearance) includes:

Bob Andrews, Cullen Winter Blues Band, Nick Schnebelen Band, Buddy Whittington and Walter Trout.

Norma talks with Frances Johnson, the widow of blues pianist Johnnie Johnson, and Richard Young of the Kentucky Headhunters.  Back in 2003, the Kentucky Headhunters impulsively recorded some tracks with their friend, Johnnie Johnson (Chuck Berry's pianist), and those tracks have just been released on a CD called "Meet Me in Bluesland."  Frances & Richard share their memories of Johnson in this interview, which aired July 10, 2015.
