Friday Night Blues features the best blues from yesterday & today. The program is hosted by Norma Martinez. Since 1995, Norma has been playing everything from old scratchy recordings of the early 20th century, to the latest in blues rock. You can enjoy hearing all the joys and pains of life from great artists who capture every emotion with a belting harmonica or an electric guitar. Norma plays blues from around world, but no matter where the music comes from, it all hits the hearts of listeners with power.

The El Paso Songwriting Contest is looking for songwriters to submit their songs in any genre, and there are slots open for original blues songs.  Songwriters who register will be asked to perform and deliver their songs on stage in front of a panel of judges.  The top 3 songwriters will receive cash prizes and a trophy.

The contest is Oct. 2 at 7 p.m., at the El Paso Playhouse, 2501 Montana.

  Norma talks with Frances Johnson, the widow of blues pianist Johnnie Johnson, and Richard Young of the Kentucky Headhunters.  Back in 2003, the Kentucky Headhunters impulsively recorded some tracks with their friend, Johnnie Johnson (Chuck Berry's pianist), and those tracks have just been released on a CD called "Meet Me in Bluesland."  Frances & Richard share their memories of Johnson in this interview, which aired July 10, 2015.

  The BBQed Blues Band hosts open blues jams every Thursday, 7pm-11pm, at The Iron Horse Saloon, 4930 Hondo Pass Ave.

  The King's X at 4119 N. Mesa hosts a Blues Open Jam on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m
