Science Studio is a fascinating 30-minute look into the ever progressing world of science. For nearly fifteen years, the show has taken in depth looks into all aspects of scientific researches and discoveries. Hosts Dr. Keith Pannell and Dr. Russell Chianelli, discuss their concerns on health and the environment. With two educated science connoisseurs, Science Studio helps you understand the inner workings of today’s science.

Science Studio also features Medical Discovery News, a weekly program that provide insights into a broad range of biomedical science topics. Biomedical science is research that addresses human health – from the study of important molecules, to clinical trials of new drugs and therapies. The story of these areas is a window on the future of medicine. We will also offer important basic information about your health. Our hope is that these episodes stimulate you to think, question and appreciate how science impacts you and your world. Medical Discovery News is produced by the University of Texas Medical Branch.


Hosts Keith Pannell & Russ Chianelli
London, England’s very own Dr. Keith Pannell created Science Studio in 1987. He has been in broadcasting for twenty years and plans on hosting the show forever. With a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Pannell provides listeners with the most accurate information. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at UTEP.

Native New Yorker, Dr. Russell Chianelli, has been co-host of the show for nearly five years. This is his first broadcasting gig. With a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Brooklyn, NY, and numerous publications, he is more than qualified to guide us through the world of science. Chianelli is currently the Chairman for the Dept. of Chemistry and Professor of Chemistry, Materials and Environmental Sciences.

September 5, 2010 Alcohol and the Brain - Keith & Russ talk with Rueben Gonzales, from the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology. He talks about his research into why alcohol often leads to addictive and impulsive behavior.

August 29, 2010 Drug Metabolism - In a rebroadcast from 11/30/08, Keith talks with Fred Guengerich, biochemist and enzymologist from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He talks about the group of enzymes that are critical in the metabolism of steroids and vitamins. He also talks about the value of an MD-PhD degree.

August 22, 2010 Catalysis - In a rebroadcast from November 23, 2008, Keith talks with Gregory Yablonsky, from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Yablonsky talks about his experience in the scientific Siberian city of Novosibirsk, where Russian Jewish scientists often found themselves working to escape oppression. He also discusses the differences between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

August 15, 2010 Forensic Hydrology - In a rebroadcast from November 16, 2008, Keith talks with Peter Van Metre, a forensic hydrologist with the US Geological Survey's National Water Quality Assessment. Van Metre talks about how sediment chemistry could determine a lot about water quality. He also talks about the pharmaceuticals found in the nation's water and sediments.

August 8, 2010 Pluto - In a rebroadcast from Nov. 9, 2008, Keith & Russ talk with Glen Fountain, project manager of the NASA New Horizons Mission to Pluto & the Kuiper Belt. Learn more about the ongoing mission to the former planet (now "plutoid") and other outer bodies of the solar system. New Horizons is expected to arrive at Pluto in 2015.
