All Right Now! Brownout Back At It Again With Funky Black Sabbath Covers

Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath was one of the coolest records to come out in 2014, with Ozzy-era Black Sabbath songs recast as heavy Latin-funk jams. But it's not just some joke made after a night of tequila, Master of Reality and Ray Barretto. The Austin, Texas-based collective Brownout truly found new grooves in these already-heady classics. Alt.Latino host Felix Contreras says it's a "a reflection of the kind of cross-cultural life many Latinos in the U.S. live in, one where a 1970s English heavy metal prototype shares record shelf space with Latin music."

So praise Ozzy because Brownout's back at it again with Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Vol. II. It will feature versions of "Snowblind," "Supernaut," "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" and "Children of the Grave," with a rotating cast of vocalists. Alex Marerro sings on a seven-minute workout of "Fairies Wear Boots," with bright and blasting horn arrangements, sickening fuzz and a touch of hazy dub, all brought to life by a polyrhythmic undercurrent that dances with dwarves. Now if only Brownout would do a Dio-era Sabbath covers record...

Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Vol. II comes out Oct. 28 on Ubiquity. Watch Brownout perform Black Sabbath covers on KEXP.
