The National Park Service has begun the controversial decision to rounding up hundreds of bison inside Yellowstone National Park to be systematically slaughtered. Cattle ranchers complain that bison compete with their herds for grass, and that bison carry brusellosis, a disease which causes livestock to spontaneously abort. The Animal Legal Defense Fund has scored a victory that sets a precedent for endangered animals in captivity. As a result of the suit, 4 tigers and 3 lemurs have been ordered removed from a roadside zoo where they were living under unacceptable conditions. The Center for Biological Diversity is reporting that the number of endangered Mexican Gray Wolves in New Mexico and Arizona have decreased to under 100, likely due to illegal killings, low survival rates of pups, and possibly inbreeding due to a diminishing gene pool.
